"John NEWSOME Was Found Dead in Bed: Aged Citizen of Eastern Part of the County Dies Suddenly
"John NEWSOME, aged 77 years, was found dead in his bed about 7:30 o'clock yesterday morning at his home about one and one-half miles east of the poor house, in Muscogee county. He had not been ill at all, and his sudden death must have been caused by an attack of heart trouble, during the night. He leaves eight children, five sons and three daughters. They are: Messrs. W. C., J. T., A. S., F. M., and G. W. NEWSOME, all of Muscogee county and Mrs. Mollie WARE and Misses Fannie and Ella NEWSOME, of Muscogee county. No funeral arrangements had been made yesterday, but the services will be held sometime during today at his home, east of the city."
[Above from the Columbus, GA, Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Tuesday, 27 OCT 1903, p. 8.]
I am interested in learning more about this family, particularly the parentage of John. He appears to be the same as John NEWSOME (55, GA, peddler) who heads a household on p. 235A in Brownville, Lee Co, AL, in 1880. With him are his wife (Mary A., 42, GA, keeping house) and children Ella M. (21), William C. (19), John F. (17), Frances (14), Soloman (12), Mary A. (10), Frederick M. (8), Alice L. (6) and George W. (1). All the children were b. in GA and all age 10 or older are working in a cotton mill. My gg-gf Henry M. NEWSOME (1836-1899) heads a household on p. 236C, so it seems likely they are kin, perhaps as cousins. (Henry had a brother named John, b. 1820, who m. Talitha PIKE and appears elsewhere in 1880.)
Could this be John NEWSOM who m. 15 JUL 1858 in Taylor Co, GA, to Mary Ann MITCHELL? This also appears to be the same NEWSOME family buried at the Midway Church (now on Ft. Benning Reservation) in eastern Muscogee Co. An alphabetical listing of burials in this cemetery is posted online at:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/muscogee/cemeteries/midway2.txt
Based on these records, the family appears to include:
*John NEWSOME (25 APR 1825-26 OCT 1903), m. (15 JUL 1858 Taylor Co, GA?) to *Mary Ann (MITCHELL?) (18 MAR 1939-22 AUG 1916) Children:
1. Ella M. NEWSOME (ca. 1859 GA- aft. 1903), Unmarried and residing in Muscogee Co, GA, 1903.
2. William C. NEWSOME (ca. 1861, GA- aft. 1903). Residing in Muscogee Co, GA, 1903.
3. *John T. NEWSOME (18 JAN 1863- 05 AUG 1936). Residing in Muscogee Co, GA, 1903. Buried next to him is: Adelbert F. NEWSOME (20 SEP 1895-20 SEP 1928) - who is she?
4. *Frances "Fannie" NEWSOME (26 MAR 1866 GA-02 MAR 1942), m. after 1903 *Richard Alexander MOYE, (11 DEC 1877-13 MAR 1967, Frances died, buried: (now Ft. Benning) Muscogee Co, GA, at Midway Church Cemetery. Fannie was residing in Muscogee Co, GA, 1903
5. A. Solomon NEWSOME (ca. 1868-aft. 1903?). Speculative that Solomon is same as Mr. A. S. NEWSOME of Muscogee Co, GA, who survived his father in 1903.
6. *Mary A. "Mollie" NEWSOME (01 FEB 1870 GA-21 JUL 1912), m. T. L. WARE. Mrs. Mollie WARE residing in Musocgee Co, GA, 1903.
7. *Frederick M. "Fred" NEWSOME (26 APR 1872 GA-02 AUG 1929), m. *Ester Ann CLAYTON (22 JUN 1882-09 SEP 1946). Mr. F. M. NEWSOME, residing in Muscogee Co, GA, 1903. Apparently their children: *Aubrey NEWSOME (11 MAY 1903-18 MAY 1903);

Buried:
Columbus on the Chattahoochee," by Etta Blanchard Worsley (1951):
<How long this factory continued is not known, but in 1849 the "Columbus Factory" was incorporated, "the location of the Factory to be three or four miles above Columbus on the river." The leading incorporators were Charles D. Stewart, John Fontaine, Henry D. Meigs, J. R. CLAPP and George Stewart, brothers and brothers-in-law. This was not a large mill and made yarns mainly for the country women to use in their home cotton looms. It also carded wool. This mill was burned by General Wilson's command, when the federal troops took Columbus and burned all the factories on April 17, 1865.
After the Civil War, a mill was rebuilt at the same place, and was stocked with second-hand machinery from Louisville, Ky. Although it was incorporated as the "Columbus Manufacturing Company" in 1866, this mill, as well as the previous one, was always known as CLAPP's Factory. A railroad station nearby on the Narrow Gauge Road was also called "CLAPP's." One of the leading stockholders was a Mr. Todd, brother-in-law of General R. H. Chilton, who had been General R. E. Lee's Adjutant General. General Chilton was president, and Robert B. Gunby, secretary and treasurer.
This mill was still in operation in 1878, with R. H. Chilton as president and A. Illges as secretary. The office of the company was in town at 32 Randolph Street (12th Street).
In 1880, CLAPP's Factory (the Columbus Manufacturing Company) officers were: J. Rhodes Browne, president; A. Illges, secretary; R. B. Gunby, treasurer. Directors: J. Rhodes Brown, C. E. Dexter, Charles Phillips, T. M. N. Phillips, John Peabody, A. Illges, Joseph Kyle.>>
The property was purchased in the 1920's by Columbus Power and Electric, which was eventually merged into the Georgia Power Company, with headquarters in Atlanta. Edwin M. CLAPP was the local (Columbus area) vice-president and general manager of the expanding utility. Although it has been said he was of no relation to J. R. CLAPP mentioned above, I suspect otherwise. There is an effort to restore the CLAPP's Cemetery, which served the mill community that sprang up around CLAPP's Factory.Richard married Christian, Mary Joice on 03 Mar 1839 in , Meriwether, Georgia. Mary (daughter of Christian, Obediah Maske and Barnes, Joanna) was born on 15 Feb 1814 in , Madison, Georgia; died on 17 May 1862 in Flat Rock, Randolph, Alabama; was buried in May 1862. Due to 2 census records (Nancy's and Ivy's), I believe Mary Joice Christian was actually born in Georgia, but I need to do further research before changing the birth place.

1820 Federal Census for Warren County, GA
The 1820 census put people in thirty-two brackets. The only name given
is that of the head of the family. All the males in the 16-18 bracket
should also be included in the 16-26 bracket, and this does seem to be
the case for Warren Co. The thirty-two brackets listed across the page
are:
#1 Free White Males age 0-10 #7 Free White Females age 0-10
#2 " " " " 10-16 #8 " " " " 10-16

#4 " " " " 16-26 #10 " " " " 26-45
#5 " " " " 26-45 #11 " " " " 45+
#6 " " " " 45+
The next four brackets deal with citizenship and occupations

The next eight brackets show the male and female slaves
#16 Males Slaves age 0-14 #20 Female Slaves age 0-14

#18 " " " 26-45 #22 " " " 26-45

When the spelling of the name was clear, I followed it. Thus names such
as 'Jonston'. When the name was not clear I put my best guess based on
other records mostly the 1830 census and/or marriage records.
