Barb McGee - Mar 31, 2004 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item From census records, Lucenda is the 2nd wife of Alexander Ambrose Bates.
I believe his first wife was Mary Elizabeth Huddleston (from the Arkansas Marriages 1850-1900, they married July 25, 1876, Montgomery County, Arkansas). Mary E. was the mother of Pearl Bates. I also believe that Mollie Bates, another daughter of Mary & A.A. Bates, married Thomas Marion Summers.

Here are all the census records I've found for this Bates family:

1870 Polk County, Arkansas, Big Fork Township, Big Bend PO, 19 Aug 1870, pg. 275B/94 (image 6):
    588/588 Bates,Stephen C.44, m,w,Farmer, $1000/$500, SC

    David, 9, m, w, AR
    Dickey, Mary, 17, f, w, AR
    Jackson, 17/14(?), m, w, AR
Note: I believe this is A.A. Bates with his parents--his birth would figure ca 1857 so it may be off 2-3 years!

    Notes:

In July 1838, Robert represented the Mt. Gilead Primitive Baptist Church at an Association he led at Looney's Creek in Marion County,Tennessee. From 1842 to 1844 he must have had some difficulties with the Church since he was invited to attend but apparently did not attend. Then, in June 1844, he was not invited "but came and declared himself no more of us" according to the Mt. Gillead Primitive Baptist Church Minute Book. Then in August 1844 Robert was excluded which means he was kicked out of the church. In July 1869 Robert was restored to membership and in October 1869 he was dismissed by letter.

Robert served in the Florida War and was a Private in Company I,Jacoway's Company Alabama Volunteers, Snodgrass Regiment of the North Alabama Volunteers. He enlisted November 1, 1837 and was discharged at Wetumpka,
Alabama, April 1838. He applied for a pension in 1885 and which stated he had fair complexion , black hair, yellow eyes and was 5 feet 7 inches tall.

Robert had a hard time trying to decide where to live: in Jackson County, Alabama or Carroll County, Arkansas. Before he moved the first time to Carroll County, Arkansas, he lived near the Caperton Trading Post at the original Pleasant Grove, Alabama. He made three trips to Arkansas and came back twice. On his second trip, James took his third wife, Mary Ann who died on the way in Rutherford County,Tennessee, and all of his children except two. The two who stayed behind were James Campbell and Joseph Samuel. Four of his children were married and their families went also. They were Catherine who married Will Holder, Tennessee Annie who married Robert Bolton Gamble, Nancy who married James Lawson Gamble and Sarah Jane who married Thomas Benton Gamble. Robert married almost as soon as he arrived in Carroll County, Arkansas.

From "The Star-Progress" printed in Berryville, Arkansas in a article called "Your Neighbor and Mine" by Edith (Champlin) McCall dated October 1, 1953 is an account of Robert Summers move to Berryville,Arkansas as told by Robert's youngest daughter, Rebecca Ann (Summers)Standlee who died in 1955. Robert joined a caravan of five families who came to Arkansas to establish new homes. They travelled in oxen drawn covered wagons. On the second day out, Robert's wife, Mary Ann,became ill and a few hours later passed away. The ox-train was weeks in making the trip to northern Arkansas but it finally arrived and Robert located on a farm at Stony Point, north of Berryville, on Kings River. The area is still known as Summers Ford.

The following was told by Abe Summers, grandson of Robert and son of Matthew Summers, to Dan Summers, a great great-grandson of Robert in1975. In 1877 Robert, his son Matthew, his daughter Tennessee Annie Gamble and her children, and his daughter-in-law Eliza Jane (Gamble)Summers made a trip to Jackson County, Alabama. The purpose of the trip was to bring back Eliza Jane (Gamble) Summers whose husband, Samuel had just died. Eliza Jane brought her step-daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Summers, and her own children, Mary Frances and Talitha with her. Annie (Summers) Gamble had also lost her husband and had decided to move back to Jackson County , Alabama. Robert and Matthew Summers returned to Arkansas. This was Robert's third trip to A rkansas.

Robert married Stewart, Elizabeth on 13 Mar 1853 in , Jackson, Alabama. Elizabeth was born on 12 Dec 1825 in , Jackson, Alabama; died on 21 Nov 1903 in , , Arkansas; was buried in Nov 1903 in Blackjack Cemetery, Berryville, Arkansas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Stewart, Elizabeth was born on 12 Dec 1825 in , Jackson, Alabama; died on 21 Nov 1903 in , , Arkansas; was buried in Nov 1903 in Blackjack Cemetery, Berryville, Arkansas.
    Children:
    1. Summers, Joseph Samuel was born in 1853 in , , Alabama; died in 1920 in , Jackson, Alabama; was buried in 1920 in Cumberland Cemetery, , Jackson, Alabama.
    2. Summers, Rebecca Ann was born on 19 Nov 1859 in , , Alabama; died on 11 Mar 1955 in Stony Point, Carroll, Arkansas; was buried in Mar 1955 in Grandview Cemetery, Carroll, Arkansas.
    3. 2. Summers, Jasper Newton was born in Sep 1861 in , Jackson, Alabama; died in Jul 1912 in Pine Ridge, Montgomery, Arkansas; was buried in 1912 in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine Ridge, Montgomery, Arkansas.

  3. Children:
    1. 3. Cunningham, Elizabeth Caroline was born on 02 Oct 1856 in , , Alabama; died on 02 Jun 1930 in Broken Arrow, Tulsa, Oklahoma; was buried on 02 Jun 1930 in Park Grove Cemetery, Broken Arrow, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

COMMENT: The Summers farm was on the Jackson Co., Alabama andFranklin Co.,

NOTES and COMMENTS by E.D. Rayburn:
Note 1: Samuel and Nancy (Middleton) Summers were apparently livingin same house-
Hold with another family who had small children. Probably family ofson or son-in-law
living in the house. There are two males age 20-30, one of whichappears to be married
to the age 20-30 female. The other 20-30 male is believed tobe Thomas Matthew
Summers who did not marry until 1845. Also, census taker showsSamuel's age as 70-80.
Records indicate that Samuel would have been 69 and possibly somemonths when the
    1840 census was taken.

Note 2: Listed, as living in the house next door to Samuel Summers wasMrs. Middleton
Age 20-30. This Middleton has been identified by Patty Woodall asMargaret Jane Taylor
Middleton, widow of Thomas Middleton son of Greenberry Middleton. Shehas 4 child-
ren listed; 2 males age 10-15 and 2 females age 10-15 and two femaleslaves 1 under 10
