4/19/00 Mrs. Brown, I understand Lewis Duggan Duke, my great-grandfather,
and Mary Simpson Duke, my great-grandmother, are buried in West Antioch
Cemetery in Bolling, Alabama, near Greenville. I'm the son of George Duke and
grandson of William Lewis Duke, who owned several hundred acres of land near
Wild Fork and Bolling. I've traced Lewis Duggan Duke back to Taylor County,
Georgia. He was the son of Darling Duke, a justice of the peace in Taylor
County and Marion County, Georgia. My great-grandfather served as a sergeant
in the 28th Battalion, Company D, the Georgia Siego Artillery, Confederate
Army, during the War Between the States. He was the grandson of Lewis Duke of
Fairfield County, South Carolina. I would appreciate any additional
information you could provide on those buried in West Antioch Cemetery.
Thanks. Bobby Duke, Frederick, Maryland >>

Mary J. Duke, at the age of 38 married for the first
time to Robert Singleton (listed in the cemetery
survey). She was his 2nd wife. I have discovered a
rather poignant poem said to be inscribed on his
headstone; When I can go back to the cemetery, I will
do a rubbing to be sure:

"The best, the dearest favorite of the shy Must taste
that cup for that man is born to die." I find the poem
interesting, for Mary died in 1902 and Robert in 1908.
Mary Duke Singleton died only 3 months after her mother
    Mary Jane Stewart Duke.

I believe that the daughters of Darling Duke were named
for Mary Jane, and possibly for my gg grandmother
    Frances Elizabeth White Duke, wife of Meredith Duke;
And, that the sons were named for Mary Janes's father
and brother (I believe her parents were Edmond and
Martha Stewart, whose son James is the "Stewart, J. F.
Co A 46 GA Inf CSA" in the cemetery survey).

    Children:
    1. Duke, James M. was born in 1848 in Tazewell, Marion, Georgia.
    2. Duke, Frances L. was born in 1850 in , Marion, Georgia; died in in Tazewell, Marion, Georgia; was buried in Singleton Cemetery, Tazewell, Marion, Georgia .
    3. Duke, Mary Jane was born on 16 Aug 1852 in , Marion, Georgia; died on 01 Apr 1902 in Tazewell, Marion, Georgia; was buried in Apr 1902 in Singleton Cemetery, Tazewell, Marion, Georgia .
    4. 1. Duke, Mabella J. was born in 1853 in , Marion, Georgia.
    5. Duke, Edmond L. was born on 20 Aug 1855 in , Marion, Georgia; died in 04 Oct 1912; was buried in Oct 1912 in Tazewell Cemetery, Tazewell, Marion, Georgia.
