Family of Andrew Baskins Stephens as outlined in his letter to Aaronand Jane Grier parents of Margaret Grier asking for her hand in marriage: Andrew Baskins Stephens was born in Pennsylvania in Cumberland County 1782 of "poor parentage" because his father's mother was a widow. His father left home at an early age perhaps due to a"domineering stepfather." He became a "resident among Northern Shawnee Indians" and spent a considerable amount of time there. Later, he became a Captain in the American Revolution. In 1806, he states that his father is "on the border of eighty and possessed of more sprightliness than many of fifty." Andrew's mother was "the eldest daughter of James Baskins, who in his life, kept a ferry above Harris's on the Susquehannah River. Her life was exemplary and the Christian manner of her death in 1794 a joy to every dutiful child that survived her." Andrew Baskins Stephens was one of ten children,tow of whom died at an early age. In the 1806 letter, he goes on to state that "the others are muchly scattered. My eldest sister and myself (the oldest and the youngest) with our father are the only remains of a once flourishing family. One sister lives within three miles of us."
