Notes - OBITUARY NOAH KARNES
(From the Eagle--1914)
(October 28, 1853-May 7, 1914)
On the 7th day of May, 1914 another landmark
citizen of Mills county passed away, in the person of
Noah Karnes. He came to this section of what is
now Mills county (29 years ago) 32 years ago. During
this long residence he has been one of the best citizens
of the county just and unobtrusive, but always
willing and ready to answer the call of duty. Such as
he were in the mind of Goldsmith when he paid that
beautiful tribute to that honest type of manhood,
known as the Yoemanry, who have made the world
what it is as expressed in the following lines;
"Ill fares the land to hastening ills a prey,
Where wealth accumulates and men decay;
Princes and lords may flourish or may fade,
A breath can make them as a breath has made,
But an honest Yoemanry-their country's pride
When once destroyed can never be supplied."
Noah Karnes will be missed by the best interests
in all life's relations; he was true to them all.
Perhaps no man in Mills county had more friends
among those knowing him well than did he. While
he never affiliated with any church organization,
shortly before his death he expressed a living faith
in the Savior of Men and a willingness and a
readiness to go.
Words are futile in the attempted expression of
all that the going of such a man means. We can but
regret his going, and be inspired by his virtues to
higher conception of duty and truer living. His wife
and children and other relations have the sympathy
of all who kow them in their sad bereavement.
