While posted to Mobile, AL., he died of tetnus, a complication from a vaccination. His military records show him to have been 5' 10" high, with dark complection, having black hair and brown eyes. His occupation was barber and he
held the rank of private. His grave has been located in Magnolia Cem. Mobile,
AL: Section 3 grave 1038. His rank or relationship is listed there as unknown.
One of the documents in the widows pension application file is a transcript of
his military record from the war department to the commissioner of pensions.
It says he died at U.S. Marine Hospital, Mobile, AL. It further says"The record shows him treated as follows: Cornelius E. Mc Clure pvt. was treated
in regt. hospital June 24, 1898, diagnosis unknown. Cornelius E. McClure was
ordered regt. hospital 1 am with tetnus, in the line of duty & was transferred
June 24, 1898. Admitted to Marine T.H., Mobile, AL. June 24 1898 with tetnus,
in line of duty and died 30 June 1898." At some point in his lifeCornelius
was kicked out of the Plum Grove Church for swearing.
