Crittenden Co.
J.W. Guess was born in Caldwell County, Kentucky, July 11, 1845, the son of John W. and Nancy Warren Guess. His parents were born in Orange County, N.C. They came to Kentucky in 1832 and settled in Caldwell County near Fredonia. In 1852, they moved to what is now Lyon County, Ky. J.W. was the youngest of six children and received his education in Lyon County. He enlisted in Co. E. 48th Ky Mounted Infantry US onJuly 3, 1863. He remained with that regiment for one year and was then transferred to the 17th Ky Cavalry, with which he remained until the end of the war. In 1868 he moved to Hurricane in Crittenden County where he farmed about 200 acres. He married January 23, 1868 to Miss Sarah W. Love, daughter of William and Rebecca Knight Love. Sarah was born in 1843 and died July 2, 1869. They had one child, Thomas T. J. W. married for a second time on April 13, 1870 to Rebecca Terry, the daughter of B.B. Terry. Rebecca died August 27, 18709. His third marriage was April 28, 1870 to Sallie A. Shanks, daughter of Mentor Shanks. J.W. was a member of the Episcopal Church. He started in the milling business at Hurricane in 1881 and continued until July 1884. He died October 7, 1904 and was buried in the Hurricane Cemetery near Irma in Crittenden County.
