Notes - He was age 37 at the time of the 1880 census. Born May 21, 1841.Farm laborer, he also listed himself as a teamster or one who drove horses for hire. He was a member of 7th Independent Sharp Shooters in the Civil War. Died November 11, 1908 at the Soldier Sailor\s Home in Sandusky,Ohio. He was buried in North Greenfield Cememtery, Logan County, Ohio.
In 1883 James declared he was 5'6". age 42, weight 145 lbs. Later at age 65, he said he was 5 '3" weighing 135 lbs with complexion fair,eyes blue, hair light, occupation farmer. On February 12, 1897, he filed for increase in Civil War pension at Findlay, Ohio. He complained of rheumatism, piles, desease of lungs, He said he had been poisoned by eating meat captured from rebels.
Signed his name with an "X".
He died at the age of 67. He is not to be confused with hisgrandfather,James Bushong, who died in Ross County, Ohio.

7th Independent Company Sharpshooters. Organized at Camp Cleveland, Ohio, and mustered in January 27, 1863. At Headquarters of Generals Rosecrans and Thomas, Commanding Army and Dept. of the Cumberland, March, 1863, to May, 1864, and at Headquarters of General Sherman, Commanding Military Division Mississippi, May 20, 1864, to July 17, 1865. Mustered out July 28, 1865. Also known as Sherman's Body Guard.
