On 3 Sep 1863, Madison's father was murdered. George Shepard had rented a farm that already had a tenant on it. The tenant was angry at being removed and blamed George. He hid in the barn and when George arrived at the farm with his family, the man ambushed him, calling him a "horse thief." The horrified children ran to some neighbors, who rounded up a posse and pursued the killer. They caught and hanged him that very night. One of the boys who witnessed this murder, John Stedham Shepard, eventually became a judge in Eastland Co. TX, because, it is said, of the influence of this experience.

Regarding the JORDAN connection in a recent posting to CREWS & HOPSON, I am
looking at the following marriages in Hempstead Co. AR for connections to my
      JORDANs & SHEPARDs:
CRUSE, Gideon to Lucetta HOPSON, house of Sam'l Hopson, Columbus, Ark.; 14
Dec.1843 by James H. Black, MG.
REED, John, 21, to Mariah A. Shepard,16, verbal consent of bride's parents; 1
July 1842 by Jonathan Black, JP. Hempstead Co. AR [in census she is Amanda M.]
      REED, John,31, to Ann Crews,27; 8 Aug.1852 by R.D. Gibson ,JP.

In 1828 Hempstead Co. AR, Polly BENNINGFIELD gave a Power of Attorney to George
Fletcher SHEPARD. George was married to Lucretia JORDAN, dau of Charles JORDAN
of Henry Co. GA in 1830 (d 1844 Talladega Co. AL). I have yet to find what
business he conducted on her behalf in GA.
