Family Newsom, Moses, b. Abt 1709, , Surry, Virginia Notes - Moses Newsom married a woman of African-American descent named Judah. They had four children, all sons, named John, Moses, Jr., James and Booth. These siblings settled in the vicinity, established families, and were "regular" and respected members of the community. One or more served with units of the Virginia state militia and might have served in the Revolutionary War. They and their descendants were classified as "free blacks" or "free Negroes" in later county, church and other civil records. Thus there is an African-American line of cousins in the Newsome family.
