Herald Journal, The (Logan, UT) - July 15, 2001
Deceased Name: Mary LaVern Griffin
LOGAN, Utah - Mary LaVern Griffin passed away Thursday, July 12, 2001 at her home in Logan. She was 98 years old. LaVern was born on Feb. 23, 1903, to John and Miriam Marston Taylor. She was the third of six children. In 1926 she married Howard Samuel Griffin of Newton, Utah, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Howard and LaVern had two children, a son, Merlin Howard Griffin, and a daughter, Mary Lorraine Demars. Together with her husband and son, LaVern started the business now known as Griffin's Farm and Garden Supply on South Main in Logan. LaVern was a person of many talents. She was a fine cook and had a love for poetry. Her deep sympathy for living things gave her a "green thumb" and an innate understanding of what plants need to flourish. She and her husband maintained a beautiful yard and garden for decades, and she was well known for her African violets. She loved songbirds and at one time raised and sold canaries. LaVern devoted her life to nurturing her family. Her kindness, understanding and love had a powerful and positive effect on many lives. LaVern is survived by her daughter, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 16, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., in Logan. Funeral services will begin at noon on Tuesday, at the LDS 13th Ward chapel, 195 S. 100 East, in Logan. Family and friends may view the casket from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at the Logan Cemetery.
