Notes - Elizabeth Louise Brown, said to be related to Lawyer Mark Brown and Caney Brown, was the daughter of Samuel Brown, who owned land near Linville Gorge, North Carolina on the side of what is now know as Brown Mountain, site of the famous and mysterious "Brown Mountain Lights." The family line descends from (1) Richard Brown (159?-1655)born in Ireland, immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Here moved to Southold on Long Island in the Colony of New York and died there in 1655. His son, (2) Richard Brown II came to American with his parents as a child. He married Hannah King, lived At Southhold, dying there in 1689. His son, (3) Jonathan Borwn (1653-1711) married Mary Gardner and removed to Salem County New Jersey where he died in1711. Jonathan's only known son, Henry Brown (1690-?) married Mary Giles. His son, (5) William Brown (172?-179?), born in Salem County, removed to Augusta Co., Va. His wife's name is unknown. By 1784, he was living in Surry, Co., N.C., where it is believed he died. Known Children: William II, John, Abner, and Samuel. Of these, (6) Samuel Brown was born in Augusta Co., VA and came to Surry County with his parents. On August 7, 1787, he was granted 40 acres on the Catawba River in Burke Co. and later moved in the same county to what is know known as Brown Mountain.
