Thomas Todd Answers the Final Summons
At the Age of 88.
At 2 a. m. Tuesday, the soul of Thomas Todd took its flight from the tired and worn out body that had been its habitation for over eighty-eight years. Another of the early pioneers, both to Utah and to the valley, has passed away and coming from that hardy Scotch ?, to withstand the rigors and hardships of pioneer life.
Thomas Todd was born at Penpont, Dumfries, Scotland, Jan. 28, 1821. He married Margaret Shankland Jan. 25, 1850, joined the L. D. S. church Sept 15, 1850 and accompanied by his wife, set sail for America Feb. 25, 1854. They arrived in Salt Lake City Oct. 1st of the same year and began the establishment of a home at that place. In the fall of 1857 he spent sixty=six days in Echo canyon Standing guard against the advance of Johnson’s army. While away his family were moved to Spanish Fork where they lived until the spring of 1860 when they came as pioneers to this valley. There were born to him nine children, five sons and four daughters, five of whom survive him, two sons and three daughters. He has twenty-nine grand children and nine great grand children.
Mr. Todd was an enthusiast on “Mormonism� and held many positions of trust and honor both in the church and in the state.
In the fall of 1866 he served as captain in company C in the Blackhawk war under a commission issued by Governor Drake. He served two terms as county selectman and also served as school trustee and road supervisor.
Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday and the remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife who preceded him one year, seven months and eight days.
