He was graduated from Dickenson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in 1800; received his d.d., degree from Jefferson College, Cannonsbugh, Pennsylvania; was licensed to preach at Long Cane, South Carolina, in 1802; ordained at Sardis, North Carolina, in 1804; served there and at Providence until 1815; was the founder of Erskine College at Due West, South Carolina; resigned his charge at Providence, but continued at both Sardis and Steel Creek in Mecklenburg County, until 1842, when he retired on account of his age. He is said to have been a famous Presbyterian minister, stood erectly and had the unwrinkled face of a youth. Records show he was the executor of his father's will. On October 7, 1806, he married Isabella Harris, born 1783; died October 25, 1841, aged 58. (Bible Record). Isabella ws a daughter of Huge and Martha Harris and a grand-daughter of John Harris. Her father, Hugh Harris, was the Ruling Elder of the Sardis Presbyterian Church.
