Notes - John B. Ensley, Sr, 91, former state legislator and one of Jackson County's leading business, died Tuesday at noon at his home here after a long illness. He was the son of the late John and Cynthia Parris Ensley, A native of Jackson County, and had been a political leader in community and political affairs for many years. Ensley served in the 1896 and the 1922 sessions of the General Assembly. A Republican in 1896 he tied in the general election with the Democratic candidate,the late Judge Walter Moore, and then won the runoff by two votes. He was a deputy US marshall from 1897 until 1913. Ensley was a charter member of the board of trustees of the C.J. Harris Community Hospital,a deacon emeritus of the Sylva Baptist Church and a long-time teacher of the Men's Bible Class of the Church. A trustee of the old Sylva Collegiate Institute Ensley was at one time Road Commissioner for Jackson County. He was in retail and wholesale busilness from whilch he retired in 1948.
Surviving are his second wife, Mrs. Lucie Luck Ensley, whom he married in 1924. His first wife was the former Miss Mollie Queen who was the mother of six surviving children. Also, surviving are three daughters, Mrs. H. M. Hooper of Sylva, Mrs. Cris Gerhardstein of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. John Kieser of Emporium, PA; three sons, A.B. Ensley of Asheville, Chester Ensley of Cleveland Ohio, and Blane Ensley of Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.Funeral services will he held Friday at 2:30pm in the Sylva Baptist Church with the Rev R. W Abrams officiating. Burial will be in Keener Cemetery. Moody Funeral Home is in charge. - His brother Samuel Ensley is buried at Trackrock Cemetery in Blairsville, Union, Georgia
