      James Burnis Newsome
      Dec. 29, 1913-July 24,2002
The Newsome family was a large one, with 14 Children and now, with the death of James Burnis Newsome on July 24, only two of them are still living.
James Newsome was 88 years old and in pretty good health for someone who had reached that age, his family said.
He lived alone and apparently had died peacefully during the night.
One of his daughters, Rachel Lanier, said her father was happy to be a participant in the "Meals On Wheels" program and it was due to the program participants' diligence that Mr. Newsome was found so quickly.
When he did not answer the door, a manager of the program was contacted.
"Those wonderful people immediatley called us long distance to let us know he did not come to the door and asked who could be contact to get into the house and check on him.
"We immediately called his niece who lived across the street, who took off a window screen to gain entry," Mrs. Lanier said. "Had it not been for the concern and thoroughness of the "Meals On Wheels" folk, it could have been even the next day before he was found. We are so grateful to them."
Born just four days after Christmas in 1913, he was the son of John Francis Christian Newsome and Sarah Jane Newsome.
He was a machinist by trade and worked in an engineering and production role at the Y-12 atomic weapons plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn. from 1954 until 1963, when he moved to Winter Garden. Fla.
He still maintained his home in Phenix City and moved back in 1972 and lived in his home full time.
Mrs Lanier described her father as a very interesting man. "He kept a journal throught the years and recorded a lot of things that most people wouldn't bother with and we are really looking forward to reading it because he always kept his sense of humor and was a lot of fun.
In fact, the entire family enjoys life and a good laugh. Maybe laughter really is the best medicine-helived to be 88 and his surviving brother and sister are 83 and doing well."
Preceded in death by his wife, Delia Lee Newsome and eleven of his brothers and sisters, he is survived by three daughters, Rachel Lanier and Roberta Newsome, both of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Brenda Parsons, Ebro, Fla.
Other survivors include a brother, Rufus Newsome and a sister, Beth Hand, both, both of Phenix City, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on July 27 from the Chapel of Colonial Funeral Home, with burial in Riverdale Cemetery, Columbus, Ga.
