SARAH ANN PRIDAY WINKLESS

 

            Sarah Ann Priday daughter of Samuel and Emily James, was born 8 Feb 1854 in London, England.  Her parents accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 1848.  Samuel Priday was Branch President. 

            The family left England in the Spring of 1863.  The family consisting of father, mother, Charles James Priday, Martha Esther, Thomas Samuel, Jane Elizabeth, Mary Emily, William James, and Sarah Ann, the youngest.

            The oldest brother, Charles was taken off the boat to be a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, so he didn’t come with the family.  Sailing on the ship, Amazon, they took eight weeks on the Atlantic Ocean, arriving in New Orleans, they came up the Mississippi River to Council Bluffs, then took Ox teams across the plains.  Eight weeks later arrived at the 8th Ward camp grounds in Salt Lake City, Utah, 6 Oct. 1863.  They camped six weeks looking for a home.  They bought the home at 316 West 7th South in the fifth ward.

            Sarah Ann Priday married Joseph Winkless on the 25 July 1868 in the old Endowment House.  They are the parents of eleven girls and one boy.  They raised all to womanhood and manhood except one girl, Angenetta the first born.  She died when she was five years old of Whooping cough.

            Sarah Ann Priday was an immaculate housekeeper.  She sewed beautifully and made most of the cloths for her daughters.

            She died on the 2 Sep. 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah. 

            She used to tell about the black manarkie hen her parents brought from England with them.  Her mother was ill and this hen laid an egg every day for her sick mother.
