1. McClure, James was born in 1772 in , , Virginia; died in 1853 in , Russell, Kentucky. Notes:
James McClure who married Mary Buchanan, bond 31 Jan 1803 in LincolnCo. KY.
James McClure was born in 1772. According to the 1850 Russell CountyKy. census
record, he was from Virginia. He is living with his daughter SarahMcKinley. He died in 185 3 in Russell County.
Stanley McClure Sr. (1902-1995) told the following stories about theearly
McClures in Russell County during some videotaped interviews. Stanleywas the
great, great, grandson of James & Mary Buchanan McClure.
James McClure and Mary Buchanan were married in 1803 in Lincoln County
Kentucky. "The McClures came to Russell County in 1803 (then it wasCumberland
County). James had been in Swan Pond Bottom for a few years wintering
horsestock in those canes. In them days, hay wasn't plentiful and thestock eat
the blades off them green canes."
"In 1803, they (James & Mary) (others?) packed off down here in awagon headed
for Swan Pond. They got up here at Goose Creek. It was flooding. Theywent into
it too deep and liked to have got washed away, and great grandmotherMary got
wet and took pneumonia -- liked to have died despite all they coulddo. They
said she never was a stout woman after that ---- but she was stoutenough to
have had about 10 children after they got to Swan Pond."
"Mary Buchanan is buried in Swan Pond. James McClure is buried in thisGlover
Cemetery. (In Russell County off Hwy. 127) James' son, Nathan, ownedthis whole
country down here, Kane Ridge. And had a big house, the best log houseever
built in Russell County by far according to Walter Carnes. It wasfinished in
the last detail. It wasn't a rough log house."
"I assume that my great grandfather was visiting or staying possiblyout here
at Nathan's and he died and they took him out here and buried him. JoAb (Job)
Glover married a sister to old James McClure. And that's a Glovergraveyard. He
might have even been at the Glover's, but anyway he was buried in anunmarked
grave up there in that little graveyard. And mother always said it wasa
strange thing to her that the wealthiest man in Russell County didn'tsee to it
that his parents had a marked stone at their graves."
"Mary (Buchanan) had a slate -- homemade stone -- and my mother saysthat one
day a man passed. And he come from up toward grandfather's and then hecut
across and went over to that graveyard (in Swan Pond). It looked likehe had a
hammer in his hand. Said the next time she was over there, thattombstone --
slate stone -- was beat all to pieces. I used to know where itwas...."
Stanley was born in the old James McClure cabin. "It was a log housethat I was
born in, and they tore it down. I don't know why. The picture I saw ofit, it
was spic and span. As to why they tore it down, I don't know. To proveit was
spic and span, they built that crib out there that fell down -- usingtimbers
that came out of that old house; that mill house (still standing) --that floor
is an ash floor that came out of the log house. It must not have beenrotten. I
don't know if my mother just demanded a new house or what happened. The
basement was right there in the front yard."
(Stanley's parents tore down the old cabin and filled in the basement. They
built a new house just behind where old James' cabin sat. Stanleytalked about
having a newspaper picture of the old log house, but I haven't beenable to
locate it.)
Judy: I'm sure you have been to Swan Pond Bottom many times. You havesaid that
it is at the mouth of Blackfish fork. What does that part of thecountry look
like now? Is it heavily populated, or has it remained rural. What kindof crops
are raise there? Do you have any pictures other than of the house?Barb
Here's James' will. I also have two typed pages that include hisinventory and sale, but that 's too much to put on here right now.

what others had to say:
Judy McClure Hachey - Feb 5, 2005 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item No. I'm pretty sure this is Nathan McClure, son of James & Mary Buchanan McClure. He would be an uncle to the younger Nathan McClure, son of William and Mary. The older Nathan was a large landowner, and served several terms as a state representative and a senator (Ky.). I'd say he was well educated for his time. My grandfather said people often called upon him to read them their letters, because they couldn't read.

In Memory of my Mother (Sally Kean)
by Bryan S. McClure
Bryan is the son of Nathan and Sally Kean McClure, grandson of Jamesand Mary Buchanan McClur e, and great grandson of Alice McClure.
In memory of my mother, who died at her late residence in Russell Co.,on the 6th day of Febr uary 1877, in the 66th year of her age. She hadbeen an earnest and consistent member of th e Christian Church forabout forty years.
Blessed is the memory of a dear old-fashioned, sweet ? mother; witheyes in whose clear depth s the love light shone, and brown hairthreaded with silver lying smooth upon her faded cheek . Those dearhands, that were worn with toil, gently guided my tottering steps inchildhood , and smoothed my pillow in sickness; even reaching out tome in yearning tenderness when he r spirit was baptised in the pearlyspray of the river. Blessed is the memory of an old-fashi oned mother;it floats to me now like the beautiful perfume of some woodlandblossoms. The mu sic of other voices may be lost to me; echo in myheart, and live forever on its stringes?. O ther faces will fade awayand be forgotten, but hers will shine on till the light from heave nportals shall glorify my own.
And now, once again in the fitful pace of busy life, my feet wanderback to the old homestea d and crossing the well-worn thresh hold. Istand once more in the low, quaint room, so hallo wed by her presence.I am now filled with emotions and stirred with past recollections that I have no language adequate to express. Now and here up comes thememory of her last surviv ing hours, in which she asked me to lookaloft to the Sun that is never to set and meet her i n that land whereaffection is ever to bloom.
I had parted with kind father, brothers, and sisters which was griefto me; but when I saw m y dear mother close her eyes in the cold andtranquil slumber of death, it was to me by far t he saddest hour of mylife. But oh, how consoling the thought that when I too shall havecros sed the dark river of death, I have a hope of meeting with mymother on that beautiful shore , and being joined again with her ineternal reunion.
And now, here again at the old homestead, surrounded by the source ofmy childhood days, my m ind is carried back to time almost out ofmemory, and to half-forgotten years of yore.
How the feeling of childish innocence and dependence come over me;just here where long year s ago I knelt down in the molten sunshinestreaming through the western window, by my mother s knee, lisping myfathers name.
Oh, my mothers words, her faith and prayers, the memory of hermotherly devotion to me, wil l forever light up the pathway of myfuture life. Years may roll on and fill great drifts bet ween hers and?, but they can never drive from my memory the glory of her pure, unbounded lov e for me.
She was my friend where others turned aside;
My guide when others failed to point the way;
The one bright star to which my heart could point,
However dark the way.
No childish grief my heart did ever know,
But she was ready to assuage the pain;
She warded off from me each heavenly blow,
And bade me hope again.
She liked to see the sunshine in my life,
Her own had been so dark and chill;
With ice her heart was all aching void,
Earths pleasures could not fill.
She taught me that this earth has naught so fair,
But it must fade, overshadowed by the tomb;
No where, except beyond the grave could we,
Ever find immortal bloom.
I miss her smiles, her words of hope and cheer;
They never failed me in the darkest day;
Tis but a little while she often said,
This grief will pass away.
And oh, her eyes were beams of light to me;
As bright as stars of heaven were they;
My brightest day is dark as sable night,
Since mother is far away.

Mary Jane was married to Midian Chamberlain. I think that they (ormore likely, just he) left Russell Co. at some point. My impressionis that he was not in good standing with the res t of the family when he left.
I copied some material that my mother had, but there may be more that is still in storage . I was just getting interested in family history at that time and I didn't copy everything . If I find moreinformation, I will let you know.

Nancy Hill - Jul 4, 2001 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to thisitem Hi Y'all - I just retired last Friday, so hope I can devote more time to geneaology now. Nice timeline, Judy. I am glad to have it. I do show that Julia Ann McClure Wooldridge was born 1820 and died about 1875. Abner married again to Isabel Abshire in Casey Co., recorded in Jan.1881 . He and his new "bride" are shown in 1890 Census, with his daughter Sarah. I will try to confirm Ann's death date a little closer and let you know. I am descended from Jesse Wooldridge, son of Abner and Ann. He was born Nov. 3, 1844, died May 21, 1925 in Altus Oklahoma , and married in Russell Co. Ky. Nicy Ann Blankenship, dtr of Hudson and Nancy (Helm) Blankenship. They went to Missouri in about 1890, and Nicy died there in 1895. Jesse and his children Ada Maud (b.1874), Bart Mahlon (b.1877), Ida May (b.1882), Mervin Hudson (b. 1886), Everett Roy (b. 1888), and Walter Ray(b. 1891) came to Texas, where my grandmother Ada Maud md . George D. Maberry.

Almost all information on the descendents of Jesse Wooldridge and Julia Ann McClure come from the above web site. I could not find a name to go with the web page.

Family moved from DeKalb Co., Missouri, after Nancy Ann's death in 1896.
Based on typed copy of Family Records in my possession & the name on Ida
May's birth certificate which was certified by supporting evidence, I
believe that Nancy Ann is the true name and "Nicy" was a nickname even tho
Nicy was name listed on 1860 census.
Mattie was previously mar. to Mr. Hicks; she was living with Thelma and
Vestus Hodges at time of her death. She was born in Tennessee or
Kentucky; her maiden name was Shelton

Jaybuck WILLIS got into a scrap Saturday night and received several wounds upon
the hand inflicted with a knife. He refuses to tell who did the cutting. It is
supposed he was in a little game in which the expression "Come seven or eleven"
is frequently made. Buck McNEELY, a well known character who lived in the
Glenville neighborhood, was found dead in his bed a few mornings ago. His life
is known to a great many people of Adair, hence it is needless to speak of his
imperfections now that he has passed from the stage of action. Mr. Sam LESTER
and wife and their daughter Miss Annie of Bell Plains KS, who have been
visiting in Russell County, were in Columbia Sunday enroute home. They were
accompanied on their return trip by Miss Emma DUNBAR of Horseshoe Bottom and
Mr. Thomas HIGGINBOTTOM of Creelsboro. Mr. W(illia)m HOBSON has been appointed
Postmaster at Campbellsville and will take charge as soon as his bond is
accepted and commission received. Mr. A.B. GOWDY, who has filled the position
for the past five years, made a very acceptable Postmaster and many of the
citizens of Campbellsville regret his removal. The Tazwell TN Times is now
edited by James T. CULTON, a young man who received his newspaper knowledge
from the temporary editor of the News. Jim is a young man of fine intellect and
a good writer and if the business men of Tazwell will give him substantial
encouragment he will make the Times a success. "Here's looking at you Jim."
Miss Mary JUDD, daughter of Mr. Milton JUDD who lives in the suburbs of
Columbia , had a narrow escape last Sunday. She was standing in front of an
open fire place when her clothing caught fire. She ran out of the house
followed by her sister, Miss Dollie, who succeeded in smothering the flames.
Miss Mary was not burned but Miss Dollie's hands were severely blistered.

'A HISTORY OF ELK CHAPEL'
The following interesting history of Elk Chapel, written by A.S. ROSS, one of the pioneer settlers of Elk Chapel neighborhood, was read at the fortieth anniversary of the dedication of the church, held on August 20, l9l6:
Salem, Mo., Aug. l5, l9l6. To whom this comes greeting.
I have been requested to give a history of the Elk Chapel Church since it was constructed. I beg leave to go back to the formation of the U.B. Class which was organized about 62 years ago. The first to start in the organization were IRA B. RYAN, RESIN TIPPIE and LEWIS HOFFMAN and just a few years later by CHRISTOPHER OSBORN who had just moved in from Ohio. Father EVERHART and F.R.S. BYRD were the principal preachers at that time. I came there 57 years ago and I lived there until '62 when I went to California and returned in '66. From that time I was secretary of the Q Conference all the time up to ll years ago. The old U. Con Journal became filled and a new one used. The old one was sent to Dayton, Ohio, there to be preserved among the archives of the U.B. Church. When I came away from there the new one was in the hands of GEORGE WILLIAMS, U.Con Secretary. The incorporation papers of the U.B. Church for the county of Decatur, were placed in the hands of J.M. ASHBURN!
and he deposited them in the bank of Lamoni for safekeeping. They are recorded in book 59, pages 73-74, of the Decatur County Records.
It was first thought to put the door on the south side of the church. MR. AKERS said that if we would put it on the north side we would be at the expense of putting a cupola on it which he did. It was dedicated on the 20th day of August, l876, which will be just forty years ago the 20th of this month (the day I understand this paper is to be read at your picnic.)
I was there in l903 and while there I was authorized to sell the church and parsonage. I sold the parsonage to ELMER AKERS and the church to the Episcopal Methodists. I think I sold the church for $300. I sent the deeds to Des Moines and had them acknowledged. I delivered ELMER's to him and left the church deed to be recorded in the records. That includes the acre on which the church stands on as long as it is used for church purposes and if not so used to fall back to the original owner.
And now for a little personal experience. Somewhere between '93 and '94 we had an evangelist from Des Moines by the name of MCALLISTER, to hold a ten day revival service. I have no record of those converted but it was a grand success. Some joined the Brethren and some the Methodist Church. At the time the church was dedicated, MISS MATTIE GAY, who lived somewhere east of Decatur, furnished us with some mottos to put on the walls, which are perhaps still there.
A good many of the following list have passed away and some have moved and a few remain. Now, if you see fit to have this inserted in the Decatur County Journal I have no objections.

complication of diseases. Dr. MILLER was born 21-Aug-1864 in the Crocus community,
a son of the late James P. and Sarah McCLURE MILLER. His family was one of

MRS. H.N. MILLER Dies Suddenly.
Brief Illness Proves Fatal to Wife of Well-Known Columbia Citizen.
Mrs. Henry N. MILLER, 59 years of age, wife of a well-known businessman of this
city, died very suddenly at 6:10 O'Clock Thursday morning after having been sick
only a few days. She had been in poor health for the past two years and was able
to go out very little. A severe cold developed a few days prior to her death,
turned suddenly to pneumonia which, combined with a weakened physical condition,
brought the end very quickly. Mrs. MILLER was born at Crocus, this county,
05-Jan-1875, a daughter of James P. and Sarah A. MILLER, members of a pioneer
Adair family. She was reared at Crocus and educated in Columbia at the Male and
Female High School and the Christian College. While going to school here she met
Henry N. MILLER and their courtship culminated in marriage on 15-June-1898.
Before the wedding they bought a lot, built and furnished an attractive home, on
Burkesville Street where she lived until her death. Mrs. MILLE was avery devoted
wife and a great lover of flowers. Her home and yard had been considered one of
the most beautiful in Columbia for a number of years. She professed faith in
Christ when a very young girl but never united with any church. Funeral services
were held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 O'Clock, conducted by Reverend L.W.
DRAKE who was assisted by Reverend Perry L. STONE. Interment was in the City
Cemetery. Mrs. MILLER is survived by her husband, four brothers; A.A.MILLER,
and Dr. S.P. MILLER of Columbia, B.S. MILLER of Crocus, and N.B.MILLER of

Notes for Leon Melanthon Lester
From Russell Co. Family and History Book
Leon (pronounced Len) was described by his brothers, friends and business associates as a ?goodman.? He was a farmer who was brave enough to sew up his own injury with needle and thread (doctors were not readily accessible in Swan Pond).
He was active in the Beech Grove Christian Church. He died at age 50 in the Lebanon Hospital from another injury which resulted in blood poisoning.
5. Leon Melantho 5 Lester (James M. 4, James L. 3, William 2, Thomas 1) was born March 10, 1870 in Swan Pond Bottom, Russell Co. Ky., and died August 31, 1920. He married Mary ers and owned the general store at Kendall. He attended Beech Grove School for awhile before deciding to become a dentist. He graduated from the Louisville College of Dentistry in 1913. He first began practice with his brother, Dr. W. E. Lester, in Liberty, But soon started his own practice on a house boat on the Cumberland River, traveling from Burnside to the Tennessee line. His brother, Ewell, was his chief navigator and cook. He next set up an office at Burnside, but later returned to Russell Co., this time using a horse and buggy and later an automobile to see his patients. He would take his equipment to along with him, and covered eight or ten counties in the southeastern part of Kentucky. He would extract your teeth and make a full upper and lower plate for $20.00 or extract an aching tooth for 50 cents. In December 1921, Doc Lester set up an office in the Jamestown home of his sister, Mrs. Verta Meadows. He had one of the first radios in the country and had an aerial strung all the way across Mrs. Meadow?s garden to bring in the sound. He took time off to have fun, of course, ?Hearts? card games at night and he got tennis started in the area.

BART M. WOOLDRIDGE
Vol. 5, p. 1835-1836
The kind of western energy, resource and large-mindedness required
of the young man who would succeed in the field of finance in these
days of strenuous effort and severe competition, seem to be an
integral part of the equipment of Bart M. Wooldridge, who since
February 1, 1914, has been cashier of the Citizens Bank of Headrick.
Not withstanding his well known caution and respect for conservative
measures in banking, he has the progressiveness and courage of the
present, and while carefully conserving the interests of the
depositors has contributed materially to the growth and development
of the institution, the prominence of which adds to the prestige of
the community.
Mr. Wooldridge was born in Russell County, Kentucky, September 22,
1877, and is a son of Jesse and Nancy A. (BLANKENSHIP) Wooldridge,
and a member of a family which came from Ireland to America during
colonial times and settled in Virginia. Jesse Wooldridge was born at
Jamestown, Russell County, Kentucky, November 3, 1844, and there grew
up, was educated, and married, his wife having been born in the Blue
Grass State in 1847. In 1869 he went to Northwestern Missouri, where
he spent two years, but soon returned to his native state, and
remained there engaged in farming and stockraising until 1894, when
he again went to Missouri. After two year; he removed to Eddy,
McLennan County, Texas, where he continued actively engaged in
agricultural pursuits until 1906, and then came to Hollis, where he
now makes his home, practically retired. Mr. Wooldridge has been
industrious and energetic all his life, and although now over seventy
years of age, still takes a keen interest in affairs of an
agricultural nature.
In political matters he is a democrat, but has not been an office
seeker, while his fraternal connection is with the Masons. He has
been a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Mrs.
Wooldridge died in Missouri, in 1896, aged forty-nine years, the
mother of six children: Ada, who is the wife of G. D. MABERY, a
farmer of Eddy, Texas; Bart M., of this notice; May, who married Bell
SASSER and resides on his farm at Memphis, Texas; Mervin H., who is
engaged in the hardware business at Hollis, Oklahoma; Everett R., who
is engaged in farming in the vicinity of Hollis; and Walter R., who
is a banker and resides at the home of his parents. Mr. Wooldridge
was married a second time in 1899, when united in marriage at Eddy,
Texas, with Mrs. Martha (SHELTON) HIX, a native of Tennessee, but a
resident of Bruceville, Texas. One child, Thelma, has been born to
this union, she being a student in the public schools.
Bart M. Wooldridge was reared on the home farm and secured his
education in the public schools of Russell County, Kentucky, being
graduated from the high school there in 1894. Until 1898 he remained
on the homestead, engaged in assisting his father in its operation,
and then turned his attention to educational work and for five years
taught in the country schools of McLennan County, Texas. Mr.
Wooldridge's advent in Oklahoma took place in 1903, when he located
at Martha, and was principal of the school there for two years. While
he had gained a reputation as an efficient and popular educator, he
was not satisfied with his progress, and in 1907 entered the Altus
State Bank, in the capacity of bookkeeper, giving up his teaching
work entirely.
Through faithful and competent performance of duty he was promoted
to the position of assistant cashier and remained with that
institution until 1909, when he organized the Martha State Bank, of
which he was cashier until January 1, 1914. On February 1, 1914, he
came to Headrick to accept the position of cashier of the Citizens
Bank, and this he has retained to the present time. This institution
was established in 1904, the founder being J. E. ERNST, and in 1912
the present handsome banking house was erected on the corner of Main
and Fourth streets. The capital of the bank is $10,000, its officials
are W. E. SANDERSON, president; J. R. MCMAHAN, vice president, both
of Altus; and B. M. Wooldridge, cashier, and it is known as one of
the substantial financial concerns of Jackson County. Mr. Wooldridge
has thoroughly established himself in the confidence of the people of
this community, and his own well-known integrity has done much to
attract business to the bank's coffers. He is a director in the
Wichita Southern Life Insurance Company of Wichita Falls, Texas.
In political matters Mr. Wooldridge is a democrat, but he has
selected his career and has followed it closely, and in it public
service has played no part. With his wife he attends the Methodist
Episcopal Church, of which both are active members, Mr. Wooldridge
being a member of the board of stewards. His fraternal connections
are numerous, including membership in Altus Lodge No. 62, Ancient
Free and Accepted Masons; Altus Chapter No. 60, Royal Arch Masons;
Altus Council; Eldorado Commandery, Knights Templars; Altus Chapter,
Order of the Eastern Star; and Altus Lodge of Odd Fellows, and he is
also a member of the Oklahoma State Bankers Association.
In September, 1909, at Altus, Oklahoma, Mr.Wooldridge was married to
Miss Crowell HAM, daughter J. R. Ham, of Artesia, New Mexico. They
have no children.
