    First Families

    W.G.W. Kincaid, who served four years in the Civil War and was one of Gen. Robert E. Lee's lieutenants, was married to Annie E. Clark in Coryell County in 1867. They had 10 children and came in a covered wagon to Taylor County about 1894. They bought land in the Buffalo Gap-Iberis area for 50 cents an acre.
    All who knew Mr. Kincaid personally recognized him a good man, as evidenced by an editorial printed in an Aug. 21, 1904 issue of the Abilene Reporter when he died.
    "Taylor County lost one of her best citizens and best men in every respect when William George Washington Kincaid died yesterday. Few men equalled him in all the qualities which go to make up true manhood, and none surpassed him. His body was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon in the Abilene Cemetery, the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was an honored and worthy member, conducting the ceremonies. Hewas a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church , of which he wasan elder for 37 years and a Sunday school teacher for 15 years.
    "A large concourse of people followed the remains from BuffaloGap, testifying to the hi gh esteem in which he was held by those whoknew him best. To us his death is a personal los s, for we hadlearned to honor him because of his intrinsic worth; his visits to oureditoria l office were always a source of valuable information andpleasure..."
    The children of this family were Gertrude Brookreson and JohnKincaid, Buffalo Gap; Bil l Kincaid, Ola Millard, Lula Street, AllieGreen and Miss Mae Kincaid, Tye; Pearl Wiggins, Ib eris; Annie West,Waco; and Nell West, Abilene. All are deceased.

    The following information comes from Scott McKay, Roswell, GA researcher of Descendants of 10th Texas Infantry(SMckay1234@aol.com)

    1Lt. William George Washington Kincaid - Age 23 upon enlistmentas 5Sgt. with Co. K, 10th Texas Infantry, at Ft. Hebert (at VirginiaPoint in Galveston Harbor) on January 28, 1862 . He was an Alabama native living at Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas, his parents moved to Arkansas, when he was three years old, and he moved to Texas in 1860. He stood 6 foot tall with dark eyes, dark hair and having a dark complexion. He was promoted to 4Sgt. on August 16, 1862.
    4Sgt. Kincaid was captured with the command at Arkansas Post, Arkansas on January 11, 1863. He arrive at Camp Douglas Prison on January 29th. He was paroled for exchange from Camp Douglas Prisonon April 1, then exchanged at City Point, Virginia on April 7, 1863.He was knocked down by the explosion of a shell at the battle of Chickamaugua, Georgia, on September 20, 1863 leaving his hearing permanently impaired. He was "promoted to 2Lt. on March 15, 1 864 in accordance with G.O. No. 11 at Brigade Hd Qrs by Brig. Genl.Granbury." He was captured as 1Lt at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, and sent to Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, Ohio,on December 3, 1864, where he was released on June 16, 1865 as per General Order No. 109, A.G.O.
    Kincaid married Annie E. Clark at Coryell County, Texas on January 24, 1867 and raised ten children. William George Washington Kincaid died at his home near Buffalo Gap, Texas on August 18, 1905.
    At age 65, Annie E. Kincaid applied for a Widow's Pension on March 26, 1914 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. She stated she had been a resident there at her permanent address for 21 years, and that she was born in Bedford County, Tennessee. She also stated "I do not own any property and do not pay any taxes." At age 68, James S.Ritchey, former Pvt. of Co. E. , 10th Texas testified on Mrs. Kincaid's behalf, from his home at Mannsville, Johnston County ,Oklahoma, that 1Lt Kincaid "served honorably throughout his enlistmentand if you had seen him take a federal flag from a yankee at Franklin, Tenn., you would have thought so." Both Lt. Kincaid & Pvt.Ritchey were captured at that battle. Mrs. Kincaid's application was approved on June 1, 1914.
    Mrs. Annie E. Kincaid died in her home, at Tye, Taylor County,Texas on January 30, 1937 ; her death certificate stated, "She died of shock following fracture of right hip from a fall."

    William married Clark, Ann Elizabeth on 24 Jan 1867 in , Coryell, Texas. Ann was born on 12 Aug 1849 in Millersburg, Rutherford, Tennessee; died on 20 Jan 1937 in , Coryell, Texas; was buried in Jan 1937 in Abilene Cemetery, Abilene, Taylor, Texas . [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
