  1. 1.  Brown, Elizabeth Louise was born about 1785; died in 1832 in Sandy Musk Creek, Leicester, Buncombe, North Carolina; was buried in 1832 in Turkey Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Leicester, Buncombe, North Carolina.

    Notes:

    Elizabeth Louise Brown, said to be related to Lawyer Mark Brown and Caney Brown, was the daughter of Samuel Brown, who owned land near Linville Gorge, North Carolina on the side of what is now know as Brown Mountain, site of the famous and mysterious "Brown Mountain Lights." The family line descends from (1) Richard Brown (159?-1655)born in Ireland, immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Here moved to Southold on Long Island in the Colony of New York and died there in 1655. His son, (2) Richard Brown II came to American with his parents as a child. He married Hannah King, lived At Southhold, dying there in 1689. His son, (3) Jonathan Borwn (1653-1711) married Mary Gardner and removed to Salem County New Jersey where he died in1711. Jonathan's only known son, Henry Brown (1690-?) married Mary Giles. His son, (5) William Brown (172?-179?), born in Salem County, removed to Augusta Co., Va. His wife's name is unknown. By 1784, he was living in Surry, Co., N.C., where it is believed he died. Known Children: William II, John, Abner, and Samuel. Of these, (6) Samuel Brown was born in Augusta Co., VA and came to Surry County with his parents. On August 7, 1787, he was granted 40 acres on the Catawba River in Burke Co. and later moved in the same county to what is know known as Brown Mountain.     He was detailed to the Confederate hospital at Murfreesboro, Tenn in November 1862, possibly because he had been wounded. He had rejoined his company by March 1863 after having been taken prisoner of war by the Union Army when Murfreesboro fell Jan 5, 1863. He was held at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio and released to the Confererate forces in an exchange of prisoners March 28, 1863, at Louisville, Ky.

    He remained with the Confererate Army until l April 1864 at which time he and a group of other Confederates decided to desert and join the Union Army. They were making their way to the Union forces in Tennessee when the war ended.

    Funeral services for Stokely Ensley, 90, will be held Saturday at 2:30pm in the Mountain View Baptist Church. Rev Ervlin Sluder and the Rev Robert Vaughn will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Ensley died at 1:30pm Thursday at the home of his son, Palmer Ensley, Alexander, Rt 1, North Carolina.

    Pallbearers will be Julius Well, Spurgeon Bullman, Clifford Huey, Troy Davis, Jonah Fisher and Lewils Huey. Surviving are one son, Palmer Ensley; one daughter, Mrs. Howard Blazer of Candler, NC. eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; also two brothers, Harley Ensley of Alexander and Ernest Ensley of Black Mountian; and one sister Mrs. Florence Reese of Alexander, rt 1, NW Bowman Rector Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    Walter S. Ensley, 76, of Rt 1, Alexander died Tuesday in an Asheville Hospital after a long illness. He is the son of the late Harley and Cornelia Wilde Ensley of Madison County, a retired merchant and farmer and had lived in Buncombe County for 70 years. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ensley of Thomasville; two grandchildren and a greatgrandchild. Services will be held at 11am Friday in Oakridge Baptist Church, of which he was a member and a deacon. The Reverends Ben L.Honeycutt and Clyde Parham will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pall bearers will be Jonah Fisher, J.V. Brown, CarlFox, Kyle Martin, Willis Banks and Charles Bradley. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 today at Bowman-Duckett Funeral Home,Marshall, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

    Survivors include three daughters, Doris Harris of Phenix City, Sara Casey of Huntsville, Ala., and Violet Posey of Columbus; two brothers Lawrence Ensley and Fletcher Ensley, both of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Julie Hopkins of Greensboro, N.C., Katie Cooper of Danville, Va., and Cora Groggans of Birmingham, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.

    ENSLEY, LAWRENCE
    GREENSBORO -- Mr. Lawrence Ensley, 100, formerly of Percy Street, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Moses Cone Extended Care.
    A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Chapel with the Rev. Avon Craven officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park.
    Lawrence was born Jan. 24, 1905 in Denver, Colo. to the late Hardy Fletcher Ensley and Mary Manley Ensley. He was a member of State Street Church of God for 60 years serving as a deacon. Mr. Ensley retired as a loom fixer and supervisor from Cone Mills Revolution Plant.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sisters and wife of 70 years, Mary Ann Batchelor Ensley.
    Mr. Ensley is survived by two sons, Fred Ensley and wife Louise of Greensboro and Frank Ensley of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
    The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Chapel.

    A native of Phoenix City, Ala., Mr. Ensley was born Jan. 22, 1914, the son of Hardy and Mary Sue Manley Ensley. He was a member of the State Street Church of God, and worked in the air conditioning and refrigeration repair business.

    Surviving are his wife, Modena Chattin Ensley of the home; son, Raeford "Buddy" Ensley of Greensboro; daughters, Theresa Yawn of Summerfield and Cynthia Peeden of Greensboro; brother, Lawrence Ensley of Greensboro; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joann Ensley Bundy; and granddaughter, Sue Bundy.
