Richard Acton was born in Richland Co., OH Jan. 14, 1828. His parents were from Maryland and came to OH about 1820. He was raised on a farm; left OH in 1847 and reached Holt Co. July 14 of that year. He stayed for a time with Jacob Kunkel in Nodaway township and practiced carpentry. He married Mary E. Brockman (born Barren Co., KY) on April 4, 1850. Mary was daughter of Willis Brockman who came to Holt Co. in Sept. 1843 and settled in Nodaway township. Mr. Acton bought and settled on a farm in 1851. He followed carpentering for several years and then devoted himself wholly to farming. He owns 250 acres. Previous to the Civil War he was a Democrat, was a Union man during the rebellion, and has since been a Republican. He has (in 1877) 9 children living. Since 1852 he has acted as justice of the peace in Nodaway township.
